As COVID-19 was declared a health emergency in March 2020, there was immense demand for information about the novel pathogen. This paper examines the clinician-reported impact of Project ECHO COVID-19 Clinical Rounds on clinician learning. Primary sources of study data were Continuing Medical Education (CME) Surveys for each session from the dates of March 24, 2020 to July 30, 2020 and impact surveys conducted in November 2020, which sought to understand participants’ overall assessment of sessions. Quantitative analyses included descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney testing. Qualitative data were analyzed through inductive thematic analysis. Clinicians rated their knowledge after each session as significantly higher than before that session. 75.8% of clinicians reported they would ‘definitely’ or ‘probably’ use content gleaned from each attended session and clinicians reported specific clinical and operational changes made as a direct result of sessions. 94.6% of respondents reported that COVID-19 Clinical Rounds helped them provide better care to patients. 89% of respondents indicated they ‘strongly agree’ that they would join ECHO calls again.COVID-19 Clinical Rounds offers a promising model for the establishment of dynamic peer-to-peer tele-mentoring communities for low or no-notice response where scientifically tested or clinically verified practice evidence is limited.

Summary
Ecosystem modeling, a pillar of the systems ecology paradigm (SEP), addresses questions such as, how much carbon and nitrogen are cycled within ecological sites, landscapes, or indeed the earth system? Or how are human activities modifying these flows? Modeling, when coupled with field and laboratory studies, represents the essence of the SEP in that they embody accumulated knowledge and generate hypotheses to test understanding of ecosystem processes and behavior. Initially, ecosystem models were primarily used to improve our understanding about how biophysical aspects of ecosystems operate. However, current ecosystem models are widely used to make accurate predictions about how large-scale phenomena such as climate change and management practices impact ecosystem dynamics and assess potential effects of these changes on economic activity and policy making. In sum, ecosystem models embedded in the SEP remain our best mechanism to integrate diverse types of knowledge regarding how the earth system functions and to make quantitative predictions that can be confronted with observations of reality. Modeling efforts discussed are the Century ecosystem model, DayCent ecosystem model, Grassland Ecosystem Model ELM, food web models, Savanna model, agent-based and coupled systems modeling, and Bayesian modeling.

During 1990 we surveyed the southern sky using a multi-beam receiver at frequencies of 4850 and 843 MHz. The half-power beamwidths were 4 and 25 arcmin respectively. The finished surveys cover the declination range between +10 and −90 degrees declination, essentially complete in right ascension, an area of 7.30 steradians. Preliminary analysis of the 4850 MHz data indicates that we will achieve a five sigma flux density limit of about 30 mJy. We estimate that we will find between 80 000 and 90 000 new sources above this limit. This is a revised version of the paper presented at the Regional Meeting by the first four authors; the surveys now have been completed.

Gamma-ray burst host galaxies are deficient in molecular gas, and show anomalous metal-poor regions close to GRB positions. Using recent Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) Hi observations we show that they have substantial atomic gas reservoirs. This suggests that star formation in these galaxies may be fuelled by recent inflow of metal-poor atomic gas. While this process is debated, it can happen in low-metallicity gas near the onset of star formation because gas cooling (necessary for star formation) is faster than the Hi-to-H2 conversion.

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a rapidly evolving multidisciplinary field founded on the premise that psychosocial factors, the central nervous system, and the immune system are intimately linked. Following publication of scientific evidence supporting this link, a number of animal and human studies have been published, both inside and outside the area of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. These studies support the existence of bidirectional feedback mechanisms operating between the brain and the immune system. To date, however, there is no all-encompassing model that predicts individual differences in the relationship among psychosocial factors, immunologic measures, and clinical disease progression in HIV type 1 (HIV-1) infection. This variability in human response has been explained by a number of cofactors (host as well as environmental) that appear to accelerate the course of the disease.
Since psychosocial factors are highly amenable to behavioral interventions, several models for intervention research have been proposed to evaluate whether such interventions can enhance immune functioning, thereby curtailing disease progression. Examination of these interventions in the context of PNI and HIV-1 infection, however, is rather limited. Therefore, researchers and clinicians must not only consider conceptualizations and paradigms in this area of research, but also focus on empirically testable, theory-driven models that allow for the unique characteristics of individual patients.

The origin of the far-infrared emission from the nearby radio galaxy M87 remains a matter of debate. Some studies find evidence of a far-infrared excess due to thermal dust emission, whereas others propose that the far-infrared emission can be explained by synchrotron emission without the need for an additional dust emission component. We observed M87 with PACS and SPIRE as part of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS). We compare the new Herschel data with a synchrotron model based on infrared, submm and radio data to investigate the origin of the far-infrared emission. We find that both the integrated SED and the Herschel surface brightness maps are adequately explained by synchrotron emission. At odds with previous claims, we find no evidence of a diffuse dust component in M87.

A model is derived that relates yield to levels of applied fertilizer in terms of parameters that have direct physical meaning. N8, P8, and K8 define the contribution of the soil to the supply of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for plant growth; BN, BP and BK define the responses to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer at low nutrient levels and aN is the level of nitrogen required to raise the osmotic pressure sufficiently to prevent growth.
To test the model, field experiments were carried out on French beans and summer cabbage in which 125 different combinations of levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertilizers were applied. The yield data from each block of each experiment fitted the model very well. Fitted values differed from block to block but these differences could be attributed to the fact that for each block equally good fits were often obtained with widely differing parameter values. Estimates of N8 were made from chemical analysis of the (NH4 + NO3) — N of soil samples from the field plots, and P8, and K8 from chemical studies of the adsorption of phosphate and potassium on untreated soil. They were in substantial agreement with the average values obtained by the entirely different procedure of fitting the model to the yield data. Also estimated values for BN, BP and BK and aN from other chemical studies were consistent with those obtained by model fitting.
It is concluded that although the theory has limitations it is broadly in accord with the results of the detailed field experiments.
Comparison of the effects of potassium fertilizer on the yield, potassium content and quality of 22 different vegetable and agricultural crops

Sixty-one experiments with 15 levels of K fertilizer in the presence of excess N and P fertilizer were carried out on adjacent sites of the same field. Yield was always related to level of K fertilizer by a ‘diminishing returns’ type curve, and a derived equation, which defined relative responsiveness in terms of a single parameter, fitted the data for each crop very satisfactorily. Although the responsiveness of many of the crops was similar there were marked differences and the optimum levels of K (defined as the level at which a further 10 kg/ha increased yield by 1%) varied from 0 to 360 kg/ha, depending on the crop. Responsiveness was largely independent of the plant family to which the crop belonged, but was related to the mean plant weight atharvest; the larger the weight the less reponsive the crop. No general relation existed between responsiveness and duration of growth.
The % K in the dry matter of leaves (including stems) at harvest of crops receiving the optimum levels of K fertilizer was mainly determined by the family. It was generally between 0·9 and 1·1 for the Amaryllidaceae, between 1·1 and 1·2 for the Leguminosae and between 1·9 and 2·5% for the Cruciferae. The difference between the % K in the dry matter with the optimum level of K fertilizer and that with no fertilizer was proportional to responsiveness. Percentage K at harvest was a good indicator of the extent to which crop growth was restricted by lack of potassium.
At harvest crops receiving the optimum levels of K fertilizer contained between 29 and 220 kg/ha of K, but uptake increased asymptotically to a maximum as K applications were raised to higher levels. Maximum uptake for nearly all crops was almost double the uptake with the optimum fertilizer application.
Percentage recovery of 100 kg/ha of added K fertilizer varied between 8 and 70%, roughly in proportion to the total crop dry weight, which varied between 1 and 15 t/ha.
Effects of level of K fertilizer on crop quality were also measured and over the practical range of applications the effects were generally small.
The differences between the K requirements of crops are discussed and it is argued that the responsiveness of one crop relative to that of another would be expected to be similar on a range of soils.

Fifty-six experiments, each with 15 levels of P fertilizer in the presence of excess N and K fertilizer, were carried out on adjacent sites of the same field where the soil was maintained at the same low P status. Yields, in every experiment where there was a response, were related to level of P fertilizer by a diminishing-retums type curve, and fitted an inverse polynomial equation with a single parameter to define responsiveness. Responsiveness of many crops were similar but there were, nevertheless, considerable inter-crop differences.
Applications of P fertilizer increased the % P in the dry matter of lettuce and spinach as well as yields. They increased the % P in the Cruciferae and Chenopodiaceae without appreciably affecting yield. Conversely, theyhad little effect on the % P of leeks, onions, broad beans and French beans but increased yields.
When the optimum levels of P fertilizer were applied, % P (in the entire plant) of the different crops was negatively correlated with total dry weight per unit area and total uptake of P was related by a single curved relationship to total dry weight. In addition, the difference between the % P in the foliage and in the storage roots of the various root crops was asymptotically related to mean plant weight.
Percentage recovery of added P (100 kg/ha) by the different crops was largely determined by the total weight of dry matter. It varied from 1% when crop dry weight was 2 t/ha to 12% when it was 15 t/ha.
Applications of phosphate suppressed leaf scorch of spinach. On occasion they alleviated stem rot in summer cabbage and influenced the bolting of onions and the number of defective Brussels sprouts. Otherwise, the effects on quality were small.

The effect of level of N fertilizer on the composition, yield and quality of 21 crops was studied in experiments on adjacent sites of the same field to aid in the development of fertilizer recommendations.
Yield of each of the crops first increased and then either remained the same or declined with further increases of N fertilizer. Interpretation by means of a simple model enabled response curves to be characterized by two parameters; one representing the beneficial component of the response and the other the detrimental component. Both varied greatly from crop to crop.
The magnitude of the beneficial component of the response of most non-leguminous crops was largely determined by the potential demand of the crop for nitrogen; the exceptions were some root crops which responded less than would be expected on this basis. The adverse component was serious with root crops and those crops that are in the soil for only a short period. High levels of N increased the ratio of foliage to storage root dry weights even when total dry matter was unaffected. The changes were associated with a considerable increase in the % N in the dry matter of the roots.
When crops were grown with their optimum levels of N fertilizer a simple linear. relationship between the mean %N in the dry matter and the total weight of dry matter per unit area covered all crops. Simple relationships also existed between total dry matter of non-leguminous crops and (a) the amount of N taken up by the crop from unfertilized soil, (b) the recovery of added fertilizer by the crop and (c) the beneficial component of the response of crops harvested before October.
Percentage N in the dry matter at harvest was not a sensitive indicator of the extent to which plant growth was restricted by lack of nitrogen; a difference of 0·1% N in the plant material was associated with a 10% increase in yield.
N fertilizer levels influenced the % dry matter and the incidence of crop disorders such as rotten roots and tissue discoloration, but the effects were seldom appreciable with practicable levels of fertilizer application.

The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) is an ongoing multi-centre prospective cohort study designed to investigate the relationship between nutrition and cancer, with the potential for studying other diseases as well. The study currently includes 519 978 participants (366 521 women and 153 457 men, mostly aged 35–70 years) in 23 centres located in 10 European countries, to be followed for cancer incidence and cause-specific mortality for several decades. At enrolment, which took place between 1992 and 2000 at each of the different centres, information was collected through a non-dietary questionnaire on lifestyle variables and through a dietary questionnaire addressing usual diet. Anthropometric measurements were performed and blood samples taken, from which plasma, serum, red cells and buffy coat fractions were separated and aliquoted for long-term storage, mostly in liquid nitrogen. To calibrate dietary measurements, a standardised, computer-assisted 24-hour dietary recall was implemented at each centre on stratified random samples of the participants, for a total of 36 900 subjects. EPIC represents the largest single resource available today world-wide for prospective investigations on the aetiology of cancers (and other diseases) that can integrate questionnaire data on lifestyle and diet, biomarkers of diet and of endogenous metabolism (e.g. hormones and growth factors) and genetic polymorphisms. First results of case–control studies nested within the cohort are expected early in 2003. The present paper provides a description of the EPIC study, with the aim of simplifying reference to it in future papers reporting substantive or methodological studies carried out in the EPIC cohort.
Factors determining the duration of tracheal intubation in cardiac surgery: a single-centre sequential patient audit

Summary
Background and objective: The study was designed to identify those factors associated with early tracheal extubation following cardiac surgery. Previous studies have tended to concentrate on surgery for coronary artery bypass or on other selected cohorts.
Methods: Sequential cohort analysis of 296 unselected adult cardiac surgery patients was performed over 3 months.
Results: In total, 39% of all patients were extubated within 6 h, 89% within 24 h and 95% within 48 h. Delayed extubation (>6 h after surgery) appeared unrelated to age, gender, body mass index, a previous pattern of angina or myocardial infarction, diabetes, preoperative atrial fibrillation, and preoperative cardiovascular assessment, as well as other factors. Delayed tracheal extubation was associated with poor left ventricular, renal and pulmonary function, a high Euroscore, as well as the type, duration and urgency of surgery. Early extubation (<6 h) was not associated with a reduced length of stay in either the intensive care unit or in hospital compared with patients who were extubated between 6 and 24 h. In these groups, it is presumed that organizational and not clinical factors appear to be responsible for a delay in discharge from intensive care. Patients who were extubated after 24 h had a longer duration of hospital stay and a greater incidence of postoperative complications. Postoperative complications were not adversely affected by early tracheal extubation.
Conclusions: In an unselected sequential cohort, both patient- and surgery-specific factors may be influential in determining the duration of postoperative ventilation of the lungs following cardiac surgery. In view of the changing nature of the surgical population, regular re-evaluation is useful in reassessing performance.
Studies on the epidemiology of bluetongue virus in China

Sentinel herds of large ruminants were established at five centres in Yunnan Province, Peoples Republic of China, between 1995 and 1997. The application of a sensitive antigen capture ELISA to facilitate virus isolation procedures led to the isolation of 108 strains of bluetongue (BLU) virus. Serotypes isolated included types 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 21 and 23. Virus transmission occurred over a period of 1–3 months at each of the four positive sites, giving an overall BLU virus transmission period for the province of 5 months, from early June to early November. The greatest level of transmission took place in July and August. The duration of viraemia in individual animals varied from 1 to 7 weeks, with a mean calculated for each serotype between 6 and 20 days. The study represents the first detailed investigation of the epidemiology of BLU in China utilizing sentinel herds.

This paper reviewed work to date on multicomponent oxides deposited, utilizing openatmosphere Combustion Chemical Vapor Deposition for electronic applications. Epitaxial barium strontium titanate and strontium titanate thin films were deposited on (100) MgO single crystal substrates. They were patterned to form interdigitated structures for electrically tunable devices, namely, coupled microstripline phase shifters (CMPS). The undoped, as-deposited perovskite dielectrics exhibited a figure of merit of 53°/dB at 20 GHz and 23°C, indicating high degree of tunability and fairly low loss. High-permittivity (ε=263), polycrystalline BST and SrTiO3 were studied for dynamic random access memory, and leakage current density of 10−7 A/cm2 was measured. Intended for non-volatile ferroelectric memory, lead zirconium titanate was deposited onto a seed layer of perovskite structure to prevent the growth of the unwanted pyrochlore phase. To function as buffer layers for superconductor applications, epitaxial CeO2, YSZ, SrTiO3, LaAlO3, Y2O3, and Yb2O3 coatings on single crystal and textured nickel substrate were investigated. Electronic analyses and characterization, using SEM, EDS, XRD, and X-ray pole figures, were presented.

Careful studies of the corrosion, redox, galvanic, and oxygen evolution/uptake reactions associated with YBa2Cu3O7–δ and related compounds have been completed. These studies have led to an understanding of the many factors that contribute to the poor material characteristics exhibited by these popular high-Tc phases. With knowledge of the structure-reactivity relationships, a powerful crystal engineering approach has been developed that is capable of producing cation substituted versions of YBa2Cu3O7–δ; the resulting compounds therefrom produced exhibit markedly improved processability, oxygen stability, and durability characteristics. These materials have been combined in thin film structures so as to make prototype SNS junctions and SQUID sensors which exhibit promising device performance characteristics.
Characterization of Y2SiO5:Ce, YAG:Tb AND YAG:Eu RGB Phosphor Triplet for Field Emission Display Application

The spectral response and outgassing characteristics of the three new, low-voltage phosphors combustion synthesized and electrophoretically deposited for application in field-emission flatpanel displays, are presented. The phosphors, forming a candidate Red-Blue-Green (RGB) triplet are YAG:Eu, YAG:Tb and Y2SiO5:Ce. These cathodoluminescent materials are tested with electron-beam excitation at currents up to 50 x03BC;A within the 200-2000V (eg. "low-voltage") and 3000-8000V (eg. "medium voltage") ranges. The spectral coordinates, as compared with industrially-manufactured P22 phosphors in low voltage operation, are reasonable; however, there is considerable difference in the green coordinates, and the red and green materials show significant satellite intensities. Phosphor outgassing, as a function of time, is measured by a residual gas analyzer at fixed 50 gA beam current in the low-voltage range. We find that after two hours of excitation, levels of outgassed CO, CO2 and H2 stabilize to low values.
